Porch Rot in Castle Rock, CO
Something is rotten in the state of Colorado…
One of Chuck’s recently highlighted portfolio projects focused on the complicated issues that rise from improperly caulked joints and untreated surfaces, known as Porch Rot. In the project video, Chuck noted how exposed joints that were not properly caulked led to the wood rotting at the base of columns that surround the main entrance of residence in Castle Rock, CO. Furthermore, concerns around column integrity snowballed as the column builders did not apply any treatment to column components underneath the base trim. Water that leaked into the column base came in contact the with raw lumber that quickly degraded over time.
Chuck noted in the video that a tube of caulk that costs one dollar applied to the exposed column joints three years ago would have saved hundreds of dollars in renovation and replacement costs.
In the portfolio video, Chuck identifies the exposed joints, the untreated wood at the based of the column, and discusses the strategies he used to remove and repair the damaged column base.
